Every year for Christmas, I buy several fresh pine wreaths to decorate my home. I like to hang a very large wreath above my fireplace in the the great room.
I can only find one big enough, though at a high-end green house about an hour’s drive from my house. And because it’s a high-end green house, it’s also really expensive.
Last year, I decided it would be the last time I paid $125 for a wreath. When Christmas was over, I deconstructed my purchased wreath, taking note of how it was put together, and saved the wire base to use again.
When it was time to decorate for Christmas this year, I gathered my supplies and got to work. Here us what you’ll need:
Materials Needed for your Wreath
Wreath form
(If you don’t have a wire base, you can purchase them at craft stores or on Amazon.)
Pine Branches
Floral Wire
Garden snips
Scissors
Glue gun and glue sticks
Ribbon
Pinecones, Berries, Ornaments, floral picks, etc to decorate the wreath
Wreath hanger or wall hook
Directions for DIY Christmas Wreath
- Gather the pine branches.
Luckily, I have several pine trees in my yard that I can cut branches from. You can also purchase pine at your local greenhouse or Christmas tree lot. Sometimes Christmas tree lots will give you trimmings from trees for free.
2. Cut the pine branches into 12″ pieces. Gather 12 branches together into a bundle and secure with floral wire.
3. Continue making bundles until you have at least 24 bundles (for a 48″ wreath)
4. Then, secure each bundle to the wire form with floral wire. overlapping each one slightly as you work around the form.
5. Add more bundles or individual branches until the wreath is as full as you would like.
6. Use scissors or snips to trim as necessary.
7. Use the glue gun if needed to secure branches to fill in gaps or improve the shape.
8. Add a bow and the decorations.
9. Hang your wreath
10. Enjoy!
Here is a picture of my finished wreath hanging above the fireplace. It took about 3 hours from start to finish and cost approximately $10.00 Since I already had the form, my only expense was the decorations. I’m more than pleased with the result!
